Keeling Lecture 2022: "Success, Progress, and Challenges in Climate Modeling"
Gavin Schmidt, Director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS), will deliver the 2022 Keeling Lecture during 3:30 p.m. webinar on Thursday, April 21, 2022. Register on Zoom >>>

Title: "Success, Progress, and Challenges in Climate Modeling"

Abstract: As the impacts of human-caused climate change become more evident, and the needs for adaption and mitigation decision support more urgent, reliable and actionable information about the Earth System has become more necessary. I’ll discuss the historical development of climate models, their success and problems, how progress continues to be made and the challenges that remain (and new ones that are emerging). What is the role of climate modeling if people already understand the need for emission reductions? Does the current ecosystem of climate models and projections serve the broader user community well? Or do we still have more work to do?

Speaker Bio: As the Director of GISS and Principal Investigator for the GISS ModelE Earth System Model, Schmidt is interested in understanding past, present, and future climate and the impacts of multiple drivers of climate change, including solar irradiance, atmospheric chemistry, aerosols, and greenhouse gases.
